Programme specification:
The distinctiveness of the programme consists in its explicitly addressing the ethical dimension of global problems and challenges, and being delivered by core members of the philosophy team, but also in incorporating the unique contribution of Theology and Religious Studies, which offers a perspective on global challenges not offered by competing programmes.
The programme will have two core modules on moral and political philosophy in a global context. Together they will showcase the programme’s distinctive approach by discussing key concepts and theories in moral and political philosophy – such as human welfare, consequentialism, deontology, political legitimacy, liberty, justice, and the value of equality – before building on this theoretical basis to address particular global problems and challenges. Examples of such challenges include those concerning climate change, public health, collective harm, freedom of expression, reparations, global justice, the value of democracy, immigration, and just war theory.
Students will also have a choice of optional modules already running in other programmes both within the home School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science (PRHS), and also within the School of Politics and International Studies, and the School of Sociology and Social Policy.
The portfolio of optional modules will include topics such as war, terror, international justice, gender and sexuality, global development, environmental ethics, global health issues, international inequalities, race, and migration.
Finally, students will write a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation.
This blend of bespoke, programme-specific core modules, a choice from a portfolio of optional modules, and one-to-one teaching on a dissertation of the student’s own design will make the programme an attractive option for two broad categories of applicant: those with a background in philosophy who want to work on moral and political questions about real world issues with an international focus; and those with little background in philosophy, but with prior qualifications – or relevant professional experience – in religious studies, politics, sociology, history, global studies, international relations, liberal arts, business and finance, or economics.
Students on this programme will become part of PRHS’s already vibrant post-graduate community and broader research culture.
