Learning outcomes
On completion of the Joint Honours Degree programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the disciplines;- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the disciplines;- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the disciplines;- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;- conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable.In addition to the outcomes achieved in Year 1, on completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline;- apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to standard situations outside the context in which they were originally studied;- appreciate and employ the main methods of enquiry in the subject and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry;- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information;- adjust to professional and disciplinary boundaries;- effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms.In addition to the outcomes achieved in Year 1, on completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline;- apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to standard situations outside the context in which they were originally studied;- appreciate and employ the main methods of enquiry in the subject and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry;- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information;- adjust to professional and disciplinary boundaries;- effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms.On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- achieve effective communication in Portuguese and in the other language studied with native or other competent speakers- demonstrate complex receptive and productive language skills in Portuguese and in the other language studied and in a variety of contexts- have consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of complex structures of the Portuguese language and of the other language studied - demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of aspects of the literatures, cultures, history, social and economic structures of both Portuguese-speaking countries and those of the other language studied - effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
Transferable (key) skills
The programme provides opportunities for students to practise and develop:- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;- analytical and critical thinking;- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;- the ability to undertake further training of a professional or equivalent nature where appropriate.Students will have had the opportunity to practise as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility- decision makingStudents will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- qualities and transferable skills valuable for employment related to the subject area(s) studied, such as being able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, being able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and independent learning, including the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners- decision making;
Assessment
The achievement of the programme outcomes will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for each subject and will include:- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the disciplines;- work that draws on a wide variety of material associated with the disciplines;- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;- work that is both evaluative and analytical.Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
