Learning outcomes
By the end of Level 1, students will be able to:1. demonstrate understanding of core terms and concepts in English language and linguistics 2. outline common approaches to the study of language3. describe the historical, social, political and cultural contexts of the English language Skills Learning OutcomesBy the end of Level 1, students will be able to:1. carry out a basic linguistic analysis of given written and/or spoken data2. recognise and apply formal, qualitative and quantitative methods of linguistic analysis3. use electronic and library-based resources 4. identify ethical and methodological issues involved in collecting data5. read for academic purposes and summarize complex ideas in relation to the study of English language and linguistics 6. present a short coherent argument in an appropriate written or oral style, based on some amount of independent research, with close guidance 7. demonstrate familiarity with conventions of acknowledging and referencing source material8. communicate ideas, problems and solutions to a variety of audiences, showing an awareness of both the possibilities presented by different media, and the importance of purposes and audience to the design of communication.
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme. These may include essays, open book exams, analysis tasks, group presentations, and research projects giving students opportunities to develop key skills such as critical and evaluative thinking, constructing an argument, problem solving, the ability to analyse authentic language data, synthesise information from multiple sources and critically evaluate theoretical debates.
