BA English Language and Linguistics

Learning outcomes

By the end of Level 2, students will be able to:
1. recognise and use key terms and concepts associated with specific areas of English language and linguistics
2. discuss critically the historical, social, political and cultural contexts of the English language
3. describe the key components of specific approaches to the study of language, whilst demonstrating an understanding that these are open to debate

Skills Learning Outcomes
By the end of Level 2, students will be able to:
1. carry out a detailed linguistic analysis of given written and spoken data, with appropriate guidance
2. recognise and apply common formal, qualitative and quantitative methods of linguistic analysis, and an ability to apply selected methods to unfamiliar data, with appropriate guidance
3. recognise and apply specific techniques for analysing language data, at least including phonetic transcription and syntactic annotation
4. collect language data for a small, closely guided research project
5. identify ethical and methodological issues involved in collecting and analysing data, with appropriate guidance
6. summarize and synthesize complex ideas in relation to the study of English language and linguistics, with appropriate guidance
7. present a coherent argument in an appropriate written or oral style, based on some amount of independent research, with appropriate guidance
8. apply conventions of acknowledging and referencing source material, with limited guidance

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme. These may include essays, exams, analysis tasks, group presentations, research proposals and research projects giving students opportunities to develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to analyse authentic language data, synthesise information from multiple sources, evaluate current theoretical debates, and evaluate and criticise received opinion.
