BA English and Philosophy

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Philosophy LOs

1) Demonstrate more developed skills of argument assessment and applied those skills to a wider range of philosophical writings
2) Demonstrate knowledge of a wider range of primary philosophical texts and interpretations of those texts
3) Demonstrate understanding of a wider range of concepts, theories and arguments in philosophy
4) Demonstrate extended/improved knowledge of the nature of philosophical thought and methodology
5) Deploy the skill of independent thought to more effectively articulate and defend their own philosophical view

English LOs

6) Demonstrate familiarity with the main concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English studies;

7) Demonstrate a sound knowledge of critical terminology

8) Demonstrate knowledge of English literature from a range of literary periods and locations, including literature before 1800

9) Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the varieties of language and forms

10) Demonstrate development of and the ability to deploy judiciously a range of critical skills

11) Demonstrate development of and the ability to deploy judiciously a range of analytical skills

12) Demonstrate a sound critical knowledge of the social, political cultural contexts of the English language as a medium for literature

13) Demonstrate a command of English syntax, grammar and style via engagement with literary materials

Transferable (key) skills

a) Students will continue to exercise and receive feedback on their written communication skills, the ability to assess arguments, and the construction and defence of their own view. Engagement with teaching will require them to continue to develop their problem-solving skills, and they will use IT systems comprehensively to engage with teaching and assessment on their modules.

b) Students will further develop their transferrable skills relating to personal responsibility. By this point they should have a good idea of which learning styles suit them, how to manage their time and workload, and an increased self-awareness of individual strengths and weaknesses.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include:

- Demonstrating the knowledge and application of concepts, information and techniques relevant to the study of English Literature

- Demonstrating knowledge of English Literature

- Demonstrating the ability to be critical of scholarly work

- Demonstrating the ability to construct a coherent and persuasive argument

- Demonstrating a more developed ability to apply the skills of philosophical argument assessment in order to enhance their understanding of theories, arguments, and topics

- Demonstrating understanding of a greater range of concepts, theories, methodologies, arguments, and topics

- Demonstrating the ability to see connections between different areas of philosophy

- Demonstrating the ability to more effectively construct and defend their own philosophical view, and engage in independent research
