Learning outcomes
On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:1. demonstrate, especially through work on core modules, a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline, including:• critical engagement with major thinkers, debates and methods of enquiry in the field, putting them to productive use• comprehension of how different social groups variably make use of, and engage with, forms of film and screen culture• making critical judgements in the understanding and evaluation of these forms2. apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to standard situations outside the context in which they were originally studied;3. demonstrate knowledge of a range of texts, genres, aesthetic forms and cultural practices, and the ability to produce close and informed analysis of these;4. consider critical, ethical, and analytical views other than their own, and exercise a degree of independent and informed critical judgement in analysis; 5. appreciate ethical consideration and judgement in the analysis of production, distribution and consumption in film culture6. use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information;7. adjust to professional and disciplinary boundaries;8. begin to formulate research questions of their own, with appropriate support;9. effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;10. understand the range of attitudes and values arising from the complexity and diversity of film culture and society
Transferable (key) skills

Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:1. demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of concepts, competencies and techniques of the discipline to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;2. demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to Film Studies, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level3. demonstrating the ability to deploy techniques for working closely with primary sources, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;4. demonstrating an awareness of the importance of the cultural and socio-political contexts in which film is produced and consumed, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;5. demonstrating the ability to think cross-culturally, depending on the students’ choice of modules.6. work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;7. demonstrating an ability to construct and effectively communicate arguments and analysis in various contexts;8. demonstrating an ability to think analytically and communicate effectively, and to draw broad connections between different parts of module content;9. demonstrate an ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion in the discipline of Film Studies, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;10. demonstrate the capacity to understand, use and critically evaluate some of the main methods of enquiry in Film Studies, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level11. demonstrating enhanced knowledge of Film Studies, in accordance with the students’ choice of modules.
