Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students will provide evidence of being able to:
1. identify key aspects of the Arab-Islamic history, culture, politics, religions and languages of the Middle East and North Africa region as well as Political Science;
2. communicate the results of their work; and present a structured and coherent simple argument orally and in writing;
3. make critical and empathetic reading of secondary source material relevant to the study of the Middle East and North Africa and its religions, civilisations and cultural traditions;
4. understand and deploy some of the critical terminology relevant in Politics and Middle Eastern and North African Studies;
5. appreciate their strengths and weaknesses of secondary source materials associated with the discipline;
6. demonstrate a command of basic academic literacies, including referencing and citation.

Skills Learning Outcomes
By the end of year one students will be able to:
1. demonstrate some capacity for critical reflection and judgement;
2. work independently on assignment tasks set;
3. show self-discipline and emerging self-direction;
4. communicate effectively in interpersonal settings and in writing;
5. work productively in a group or team;
6. deliver work to a given length, format, brief and deadline;
7. demonstrate basic IT skills.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods. These may include essays, presentations, literature reviews, and written and practical exams…etc. Assessment methods are in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
1. demonstrating some knowledge of the key terminology, concepts and debates that underpin the study of Middle Eastern and North African studies and Politics, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
2. demonstrating an ability to construct a coherent argument, both oral and written;
3. demonstrating an ability to critically use and evaluate secondary sources, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
4. demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and practical competencies, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level.
