BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the year, students will be able to:
Philosophy
1. Accurately explain and critically respond to philosophical ideas, through the reading of primary texts.
2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of multiple concepts and approaches across theoretical philosophy, moral philosophy, and political philosophy through accurate explanation of ideas and debates.
3. Demonstrate a basic ability to coherently express their own views in the form of philosophical argument.
Politics
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of political systems through accurate explanation of ideas and debates.
5. Critically appraise key aspects of political systems and political concepts through the development and support of their own viewpoint.
Economics
6. Apply appropriate mathematical and statistical concepts to the analysis of business-related problems.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and models in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules and will include essays, exams, reports, presentations and posters.
There will be a range of unassessed formative exercises on many modules, allowing students to make progress with the LOs and skills outside an assessment context. Opportunities for explicit discussion and support will be made available by module leaders in office hours and in routine meetings with academic personal tutors.
