Learning outcomes

1. demonstrate an intermediate and broader understanding of a range of theories, approaches and methods in sociology, including qualitative and quantitative research methods;
2. use key sociological theories and approaches to further understand the challenges faced by contemporary societies;
3. critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry in sociology;
4. effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms.

Skills Learning Outcomes
In addition to those gained in year one, students should gain the following skills (as well as developing those gained in year one):

1. Develop analytical and critical thinking skills and be able to demonstrate these through written and/or verbal formats.
2. Continue to develop knowledge of appropriate research methods in sociology and social science.
3. Communicate effectively to a diverse audience through employing a range of both oral and written techniques

Competence Standards
1. Demonstrate familiarity with core texts and approaches in the field of Sociology
2. Construct critical arguments in Sociology and communicate findings through various channels
3. Engage in self-directed learning, with appropriate support where required
4. Identify and evaluate different approaches and methods in Sociology, and apply them to a range of social problems

Assessment

1. Demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the disciplines;
2. Work that draws upon a wide variety of critically engaged material (i.e. showing the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.)
3. A space to demonstrate competency in both critical reading and writing
