Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques in Social Policy;
- use the basic concepts of social policy to understand different approaches to social control, risk and regulation particularly in relation to the policy area of crime;

- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities ie
> be able to communicate the results of their work;
> present a structured and coherent simple argument;
> be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of Social Policy and in particular policies intended to combat crime;
> demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches associated with the discipline of Social Policy;
> demonstrate an ability to assess evidence from the policy area of crime and relate this to the reconstruction and changing nature of social policy in contemporary society;

- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of the boundaries between Social Policy and other disciplines;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the ability to communicate ideas and arguments effectively to others;
- the ability to make short presentations of ideas and arguments;
- the ability to make effective use of IT;
- skills necessary for exercising personal responsibility.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the study of social policy in relation to crime;
- work that covers a restricted area of crime and social policy;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
