Learning outcomes

For Study Abroad Students

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in Social Policy and Sociology;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within Social Policy and Sociology;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument in Social Policy and Sociology;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship in Social Policy and Sociology;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of Social Policy and Sociological knowledge;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources in Social Policy and Sociology;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project in Social Policy and Sociology;
- conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable

For Horizon Year Abroad Students

On completion of your international year you will:
- have an improved understanding of the culture of another country, reflecting on similarities and differences to your home culture;
- have engaged with a new environment whilst demonstrating attitudes to operate effectively as a global citizen.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to Social Policy and Sociology;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature

For Horizon Year Abroad Students

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- skills of adaptability and cultural flexibility;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making
- enhanced communication skills, using another language (where appropriate).

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of Social Policy and Sociology;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material in Social Policy and Sociology;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion in Social Policy and Sociology;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within Social Policy or Sociology;
- Social Policy and Sociological work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
