Learning outcomes

By the end of Year 1, you will be able to:
1. Communicate in the target language to sustain everyday conversation to a level of B1 of the CEFR for students taking GERM1010 and to a level of A2 of the CEFR for students taking GERM1020 and GERM1021
2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the target language.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of social conventions prevalent in cultures in which the target language is spoken.
4. Use appropriate receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts.
5. Demonstrate sound, basic knowledge of cultures and societies in which German is spoken that will inform specialization at later levels.
6. Demonstrate an appreciation of key aspects of the literatures and social and historical issues pertaining in the cultures in which German is spoken.
7. Bring this knowledge to bear in responding to questions set by a tutor, identifying pertinent examples in support of your responses.

Skills Learning Outcomes

By the end of Year 1, you will be able to:
1. Read for academic purposes and summarise complex ideas
2. Communicate a coherent argument in written and oral styles
3. Identify, analyse and evaluate arguments in scholarly sources and develop your own position in response
4. Demonstrate integrity in use of material and ability to make reference to sources following conventions appropriate to the discipline
5. Use electronic and library-based resources to investigate familiar and unfamiliar language data
6. Meet deadlines
7. Work as part of a team
8. Appraise your strengths and weaknesses as a learner

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme, in German and English, and will include include essays, commentaries, portfolio, individual and group presentations, group research projects, creative writing or oral assignments, and exams.
