Learning outcomes
By the end of Level 2, students will be able to:1. understand key terms and concepts associated with specific areas of linguistic enquiry2. describe the key components of specific approaches to the study of language, whilst demonstrating an understanding that these are open to debate3. demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of current knowledge, and the importance of well-supported argumentation in the extension of that knowledge4. demonstrate knowledge of a wider range of philosophical areas of enquiry, concepts, theories and arguments and more detailed explanation of ideas and debates5. demonstrate a more detailed understanding of the nature of philosophical thought and methodology, and more advanced application of the skills needed to critically evaluate and identify different forms of philosophical argument 6. demonstrate a more advanced ability to coherently develop, articulate and defend their own view on philosophical texts, arguments and ideasSkills Learning Outcomes By the end of Level 2, students will be able to:1. carry out a detailed linguistic analysis of given written and spoken data, with appropriate guidance2. demonstrate a familiarity with common formal, qualitative and quantitative methods of linguistic analysis, and an ability to apply selected methods to unfamiliar data, with appropriate guidance3. demonstrate a sound command of specific techniques for analysing language data, at least including phonetic transcription and syntactic annotation4. collect language data for a small, closely guided research project5. address ethical and methodological issues involved in collecting and analysing linguistic data, with appropriate guidance6. summarize and synthesize complex ideas in relation to the study of language and philosophy, with appropriate guidance7. present a coherent argument in an appropriate written or oral style, based on some amount of independent research, with appropriate guidance 8. apply conventions of acknowledging and referencing source material, with limited guidance
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme. These may include essays, exams, analysis tasks, group presentations, research proposals and research projects giving students opportunities to develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to analyse authentic language data, synthesise information from multiple sources and evaluate current theoretical debates.
