Year 1

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of Level 1, you will be able to

1. Understand and communicate basic information in the target language (in written and oral forms), and
interact in simple conversations (if you start as a beginner)

2. Understand and communicate key events and ideas in the target language (in written and oral forms),
and take part in everyday conversations (if you start from post-A level or equivalent competence)

3. Recognise and describe the basic communicative resources of the target language: vocabulary,
grammar, and script (if relevant)

4. Develop an awareness of the social norms and cultural values that frame the societies in which the target language is used by assessing cultural material originating from those societies

5. Acquire a basic understanding of the history, culture, and society of the countries where the target language is used assessing cultural and historical material originating from those societies

6. Identify and apply the strategies to analyse and contextualise texts conveyed in written and audio-visual formats (books, films, digital media content)

7. Recognise English literature from a range of literary periods and locations

8. Evaluate and critically assess the effects of different literary genres, and the impact of historical, social and cultural matter on the evolution and transformation of these genres

9. Differentiate the varieties of language and forms

10. Appraise the importance of the literary, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written and read

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline/s
- Work that covers a restricted area of the discipline/s
- Demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies
