Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme students should have provided evidence of having:- an advanced understanding of a range of environmental systems, their history, and how they reflect key processes, along with issues of sustainable resource use within such systems.- an understanding of geography¿s intellectual development and important theoretical perspectives applied in the study of environmental systems and environmental sustainability;- a critical appreciation of the practical contributions made by geographers to debates and policy on environmental and resource issues, and the environmental impacts of human activity, along with an understanding of their potential for continuing such contributions;- the critical skills necessary to engage with scientific ideas and theory; and to employ these ideas as a basis for their own research;- laboratory and field-based skills in environmental analysis and/or skills in the application of quantitative analysis and geographical information systems to environmental study;- skills in teamwork, investigation, presentation and communication.
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of physical geography;- work that draws on a wide variety of material;- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within physical geography;- work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
Learning context
The learning context for this year/award will:- include the use of complex and unpredictable situations. The study will be structured within a framework that provides both breadth and depth and opportunities for demonstrating proficiency in the application of concepts and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop interests and informed opinions and to undertake some autonomous study.
