BSc Actuarial Mathematics(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

Learning outcomes

. Formulate a question that can be the subject of mathematical inquiry.

2. Demonstrate facility with a wide range of techniques to solve mathematical problems relevant to actuarial practice and more generally.

3. Build a mathematical model that represents some non-mathematical reality relevant to actuarial practice or other area of finance.

4. Demonstrate facility with a range of statistical techniques to solve real problems.

5. Communicate both substantive results and the nature of the uncertainty inherent in them, to expert or lay audiences.

6. Critically evaluate a mathematical and statistical/probabilistic argument.

7. Understand, recall, translate and verify mathematical concepts in a range of contexts.

8. Under guidance, develop and present, orally and in writing, a substantial mathematical piece.

9. Articulate responsibilities associated with specialist, technical knowledge.

10. Identify different potential approaches to solving a mathematical problem.

Assessment

The majority of modules will be assessed through a combination of in-person exams and coursework assignments. The form of the coursework will vary from module to module but typically would involve solving sets of problems which may or may not require the use of computer packages or computer programming. Project based modules will be assessed through written submissions and presentations.
