BSc Biochemistry(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

Year 2

(Award available for year: Diploma of Higher Education)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the level 2 of the programme you should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Interpret and apply knowledge, concepts and understanding from a range of biochemistry topics
2. Integrate biochemical knowledge to explain how multiple cellular processes and pathways contribute to health and disease
3. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of how the principles of biochemistry and molecular cell biology can be applied to develop therapeutics to treat diseases
4. Select appropriate experimental approaches to test hypotheses and implement safely a range of experimental techniques used to study biological macromolecules, cells and their components
5. Apply computational and experimental approaches to analyse, compare and interpret scientific data generated using different experimental approaches common to the field of biochemistry

Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Synthesise, and critically evaluate scientific information from diverse sources, to e.g. generate hypotheses, propose solutions and develop logical and well-reasoned arguments
2. Express complex ideas and concepts accurately and coherently to a range of audiences using a variety of formats, both individually and in teams
3. Understand and evaluate how biochemistry can shape global contexts and how knowledge of the subject contributes to addressing relevant global challenges

Assessment

During the second year we will build on the assessments utilised at L1 to include a range of more sophisticated and synoptic assessments that will require the students to integrate knowledge and skills gained from different parts of the programme. These will include assessed practical work, data handling and problem-solving exercises, multiple-choice tests, group work, online and face-to-face discussion groups, computer-based simulations, essays, and oral presentations. Students will be prepared for these assessments using a selection of formative exercises and range of feedback methods spread throughout the year.
