BSc Biomedical Sciences(For students entering from September 2023 onwards)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to: 

- Evaluate and critique the specialist research areas which underpin the biomedical sciences.

- Using published studies of recent research, appraise how these concepts are crucially integrated and are modified or adapt in different environments or disease.

- Apply research, experimental and/or technical competencies to create a graduating level enquiry based capstone output or solution to a problem relevant to the biomedical sciences.

- Demonstrate the ability to collaborate in disciplinary and interdisciplinary team environments, contributing positively and flexibly to the team’s outputs .

- Communicate scientific and other information to a wide range of audiences and in a variety of formats.

- Demonstrate the competencies and professional behaviours and digital literacies required for graduate employment within or beyond the biomedical sciences.

- Demonstrate ethical and cultural awareness and competencies, demonstrate awareness and adherence to relevant health and safety requirements and/or regulatory standards.

- Demonstrate an entrepreneurial mind-set by creating innovative solutions to real-world problems relevant to biomedical sciences.

Transferable (key) skills

In year 3, you will make use of the full range of academic competencies developed during earlier years. You will deepen your understanding of the role of ethics in a range of contexts and be assessed on competencies relating to academic writing, use of academic language, information searching and critical evaluation. 

You will have strong competency in professional competencies such as personal and self-management and will have opportunities to develop leadership and negotiation competencies in different individual and collaborative learning opportunities. Your reflections on the ways in which your competencies are developing will also be assessed. Working individually and in groups, you will develop your enterprise competencies through project-based learning, working on ‘live’ real-world problems, developing enterprising projects of your own and through reflective experiential learning. 

You will make use of your digital literacies throughout year 3, with opportunities to demonstrate your adaptability and creativity in using digital tools. You will develop your online digital profiles and collaborate and communicate with others in a range of contexts, including online. 

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and modules specified for the year/programme and will include: 

Demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of biomedical sciences; 
Work that draws on a wide variety of material; 
The ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion; 
Evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in-depth enquiry within biomedical sciences; 
Work that is typically both evaluative and creative; 

Assessing the integration of knowledge and understanding across the discipline

It will encompass a range of both formative and summative assessment at both module and programme level.
