BSc Ecology and Conservation Biology(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

Year 2

(Award available for year: Diploma of Higher Education)

Learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate an increasingly applied and integrated understanding of concepts and information from a range of biological subjects and their applications to ecology and conservation.
2. Demonstrate an awareness of a broad range of global issues in ecology and conservation and how ecological research can be applied to construct potential solutions.
3. Select appropriate experimental approaches to test hypotheses and implement these proficiently in the lab and field.
4. Apply computational and statistical approaches to interrogate and analyse data and information derived from experiments.
5. Implement safely and ethically a range of experimental techniques in both the lab and field contexts.

Skills Learning Outcomes
Students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following skills, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. Synthesise, and critically evaluate scientific information from diverse sources, to generate hypotheses, propose solutions, and develop logical and well-reasoned arguments.
2. Use a variety of approaches to effectively communicate complex biological and ecological data or information.
3. Understand and evaluate how ecology and conservation are shaped by global contexts, and how knowledge of the subject contributes to addressing relevant global challenges.

Assessment

We use a variety of assessment methods to help you develop and assess the specific learning and skills outcomes. At level 2 these include assessed practical work, involving safety competencies, intermediate practical skills, including field-based skills, more complex data handling and statistics, together with problem-solving exercises, multiple-choice tests, group work, essays, literature reviews and oral presentations. There will be opportunities to complete practice questions and receive feedback to support learning.
