BSc Genetics(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)
Year 2
(Award available for year: Diploma of Higher Education)
Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate an increasingly applied and integrated understanding of genetic, molecular and cell biology concepts.2. Demonstrate an awareness of a broad range of global issues in biology and how genetic research can be applied to construct potential solutions.3. Select appropriate experimental approaches to test hypotheses and implement these proficiently. 4. Apply computational and statistical approaches to interrogate and analyse data and information including the effective use of large biological data sets.5. Apply safely and ethically a range of experimental techniques in across a range of experimental contexts using appropriate laboratory equipment.Skills Learning Outcomes 1. Synthesise, and critically evaluate scientific information from diverse sources, to e.g. generate hypotheses, propose solutions and develop logical and well-reasoned arguments. 2. Use a variety of approaches to effectively communicate complex biological and genetic data or information.3. Understand and evaluate how biology and genetics can address food insecurity, climate change and health on the global scale.
Assessment
We use a variety of assessment methods to help you develop and assess the specific learning and skills outcomes. At level 2 these include assessed practical work, involving safety competencies, intermediate practical skills, more complex data handling and statistics, together with problem-solving exercises, multiple-choice tests, group work, essays, literature reviews and oral presentations. There will be opportunities to complete practice questions and receive feedback to support learning.
