Learning outcomes

A2 - Explain quantum mechanical models of atomic and molecular orbitals and how these account for molecular structure.

Z3 - Describe the basic principles of medicinal chemistry including aspects of drug design and the development from lead molecules to precandidate selection. Apply knowledge of chemical concepts to solve well-defined problems in this area.

E3 - Explain and rationalise the fundamentals of one or more other specialisms within the chemical sciences, and apply these to the solution of a range of theoretical and applied problems.

K3 - Select, examine and critique a significant body of research literature and other sources of information, citing and referencing the sources used. Use the literature to maintain currency of knowledge, extend learning and support the development of solutions to specified problems

L2 - Use software to optimise chemical structures using molecular mechanics and electronic structure approaches, and to estimate values of different parameters such as vibrational frequencies.

M3 - Complete independent open-ended investigative work through a project relevant to chemistry, involving data collection and analysis and interpret the information within the context of current knowledge.

Skills Learning Outcomes
O3 - Act professionally and with integrity, with due regard for legal, ethical and societal responsibilities, modelling good practice that promotes positive perceptions of chemistry and chemists.

P3 - work co-operatively with others as part of a significant project.

Q3 - Communicate effectively using written, oral and other presentation methods, selecting appropriate content, media and methods for the audience, purpose and subject.

R3 - Plan and manage work in an adaptive and reflexive manner.

S3 - Confidently approach complex unknown problems. Choose actions based on own data and incomplete information. Critically analyze own results, as well as methodology, results and conclusions produced by others e.g. via critique of research papers.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and may include written examinations, in-class and online tests, problem sheets, assignments, and coursework in the form of projects, reports, presentations and posters.
