Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of concepts and techniques relevant to translation theory in general and as applied to Arabic-English translation;

2. Exhibit intellectual engagement with translation and revision of a range of text types, enabling students to rate and improve their own translation performance.

3. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of translation techniques applicable to their own scholarship in the field of
Arabic-English Translation Studies;

4. Proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses, and take initiative in developing, implementing and executing plans by which to evaluate these in independent study.

5. Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in Arabic-English Translation Studies.

Transferable (key) skills

On completion of the year/programme students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
2. evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
3. self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
4. independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
5. critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Approach to Assessment:
Students will be assessed using a wide range of methods, including both written and oral work. Assessments will allow students to develop and evidence the ability to:
- show mastery of translation theories and technical skills, and to apply these in devising and carrying out an independent summer project.
- demonstrate the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area, leading to their independent summer project;
- draw on a range of perspectives on an area of study, and make critically informed, well- reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
