MA Childhood Studies

Year 1

(Award available for year: Master of Arts)

Learning outcomes

1. You will have advanced your knowledge and understanding of the specialist academic discipline of Childhood Studies, with a particular focus on the social studies of childhood and youth.

2. You will have developed an awareness and understanding of past and current theories and debates relating to childhood and children’s lives and be able to apply and use this knowledge to develop clear and persuasive arguments in assessments.

3. You will develop a systematic understanding and critical awareness of some of the key issues that affect children’s everyday lives, in local and global contexts.

4. You will recognise and design appropriate, ethical and logical research strategies to use in doing research with children and young people or when working with children and young people in professional practice or in consultations with children and young people.

Skills Learning Outcomes
1. You will gain the ability to disseminate and articulate ideas, arguments and concepts related to childhood studies clearly, coherently, and concisely in written and oral forms.

2. You will have gained the necessary research knowledge and skills to design, conduct and write up a small-scale research project in the area of childhood studies.

3. You will be qualified to demonstrate independence, autonomy and self-direction in planning and completing assessments.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by assignments in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme. The modules on this course are assessed through a variety of assessment formats, including but not limited to essays, portfolio work, creative child-focused tasks, individual and group presentations.
