MA Linguistics for English Language Teaching(Part-Time)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of the structure of language, the debates regarding the nature of language and the relevance of these issues for language teaching;
2. apply methodologies used by linguists to analyse a range of linguistic data;
3. understand core concepts and debates in linguistics and language teaching
4. demonstrate critical thinking skills, with specific abilities in applying critical analysis to linguistic data, and application of theoretical discussion to the language classroom;
5. demonstrate an understanding of theory and techniques applicable to their own research and scholarship within linguistics and language teaching;
6. apply good research practice to their own academic work;
7. formulate ideas and hypotheses about language and language teaching, and develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
8. critically evaluate current issues in linguistics and language teaching, including both empirical research and advanced scholarship.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, students will be able to:
1. undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice, including time management, organisation and planning;
2. show self-direction and effective decision making in complex situations;
3. learn independently and work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
4. critically engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms;
5. take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and develop professional relationships with others.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for this programme. These include exams, essays, practical assignments, critiques and presentations, giving students opportunities to develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to analyse authentic language data, synthesise information from multiple sources and evaluate current theoretical debates. The programme uses a range of assessment methods that create an assessment and feedback culture that is fair, inclusive, and authentic.
