MBiol, BSc Biology (Integrated Masters)(For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

Year 4

Learning outcomes

1. Develop, integrate, synthesise and apply the systematic and broad understanding of relevant and state-of-the-art concepts in the biological sciences, to solve complex problems.
2. Interrogate and integrate diverse sources of scientific information, in order to design and develop methods for investigation and analysis as part of an extended piece of research on a biochemistry topic.
3. Identify and implement appropriate project planning strategies for an extended research project in the biological sciences, which could include evaluation of ethics, hazards, environmental effects, sustainability and appreciation of costs.
4. Critically evaluate the outcomes of a research project and incorporate any new findings into our understanding of the biological sciences as a discipline.

Skills Learning Outcomes:

Undergraduate Masters students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. Demonstrate the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
2. Critically evaluate their own achievement and that of others;
3. Demonstrate self-directed and effective decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations;
4. Demonstrate effective independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.

Assessment

We use a variety of assessment methods to help you develop and assess the specific learning and skills outcomes. At level 5 these may include assessed practical work, involving safety competencies advanced practical skills, complex data handling and statistics, together with problem-solving exercises, multiple-choice tests, group work, essays, project work and oral presentations. There will be opportunities to complete practice questions and receive feedback to support learning.
