Learning outcomes

B3 - Describe and discuss confidently, accurately and in detail, using appropriate terminology, a range of topics in organic chemistry. Suggest synthetic pathways to target compounds using the principles of structure and reactivity
C3 - Describe and discuss confidently, accurately and in detail, using appropriate terminology, a range of topics in inorganic solution-based chemistry including catalysis and/or inorganic materials chemistry. Apply these to systematically solve complex problems across these areas.
D3 - Describe and discuss confidently, accurately and in detail, using appropriate terminology, topics in physical chemistry such as chemical kinetics, classical and statistical thermodynamics. Use these to systematically solve complex problems across these areas.
E3 - Explain and rationalise the fundamentals of one or more specialisms within the chemical sciences, and apply these to the solution of a range of theoretical and applied problems.
F3 - Carry out scripted & investigative experiments that produce organic and inorganic compounds using advanced techniques such as Kughroher distillation.
G3 - Adapt multi-step analytical procedures and experiments to monitor and measure chemical properties and changes using advanced instrumentation. Record, process and present in formal reports more complex experimental results.
H3 - Design, write out and follow risk assessments managing toxicity, chemical stability and reactivity.
I3 - Use mathematical models and computation tools to simulate chemical phenomena. Demonstrate proficiency in algebraic manipulations, differentiation and integration of functions with more than one variable, differential equations.
J3 - Critically evaluate methods used to analyse and report data. Demonstrate abilities to assess uncertainties, and draw meaningful conclusions from complex datasets. Recognize the statistical tests and data analysis that should be performed on experimental results during the design of an experiment.
K3 - Select, examine and critique a significant body of research literature and other sources of information, citing and referencing the sources used. Use the literature to maintain currency of knowledge, extend learning and support the development of solutions to specified problems.
M3 - Complete independent open-ended investigative work through a project relevant to chemistry, involving data collection and analysis and interpret the information within the context of current knowledge.
N3 - Apply knowledge of sustainability and Green Chemistry to real problems.

Skills Learning Outcomes
O3 - Act professionally and with integrity, with due regard for legal, ethical and societal responsibilities, modelling good practice that promotes positive perceptions of chemistry and chemists.
P3 - work co-operatively with others as part of a significant project.
Q3 - Communicate effectively using written, oral and other presentation methods, selecting appropriate content, media and methods for the audience, purpose and subject.
R3 - Plan and manage work in an adaptive and reflexive manner.
S3 - Confidently approach complex unknown problems. Choose actions based on own data and incomplete information. Critically analyze own results, as well as methodology, results and conclusions produced by others e.g. via critique of research papers.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and may include written examinations, in-class and online tests, problem sheets, assignments, and coursework in the form of projects, reports, presentations and posters.
