Year 4

Learning outcomes

1. Identify an open question that can be addressed using techniques of higher mathematics.
2. Search for, and apply appropriate techniques to solve mathematical problems.
3. Build an advanced mathematical model that represents some non-mathematical reality.
4. Produce and deploy a sequence of mathematical arguments to justify a set of conclusions.
5. Show flexibility in appreciation and application of concepts.
6. Recognise and manipulate complex mathematical expressions in a range of contexts.
7. Independently research and present, orally and in writing, a substantial piece of advanced mathematics.
8. Select appropriate tools for pieces of mathematical work.
9. Apply and evaluate conflicting ethical values that arise in mathematical research and practice, justifying appropriate courses of action.
10. Identify significant mathematical facts when working in a new mathematical context.

Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Deal with setbacks and refashion a plan.
2. Gather a wide range of sources to aid learning.

Assessment

The majority of modules will be assessed through a combination of in-person exams and coursework assignments. The form of the coursework will vary from module to module but typically would involve solving sets of problems which may or may not require the use of computer packages or computer programming. Project based modules will be assessed through written submissions and presentations.
