Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:1. Demonstrate an in-depth and systematic understanding of specialised knowledge in sport and exercise medicine disciplines;2. Critically appraise theoretical research based knowledge at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine which may be interdisciplinary and / or multidisciplinary in nature;3. Demonstrate an awareness of and ability to manage the implications of ethical dilemmas and work pro-actively with others to formulate solutions whilst strictly adhering to professional codes of conduct in sport and exercise medicine;4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and critique of techniques / methodologies applicable to their own research (theory, practice or research-based) or advanced scholarship in sport and exercise medicine;5. Demonstrate an in depth, critical understanding of the connections between the key disciplines that underpin sport and exercise medicine;6. Demonstrate an in depth, critical understanding of the acute and chronic adaptive responses of the human body to exercise and sport participation, including anatomical and physiological changes, as well as acute and chronic maladaptive responses leading to injury;7. Demonstrate an in-depth, critical understanding of the fundamentals of rehabilitation based on these principles. 8. Undertake analyses of complex, incomplete or contradictory areas of knowledge within sport and exercise medicine which may be in an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary way and communicate the outcome effectively9. Demonstrate critical awareness of contemporary issues and be able to synthesise information in a manner that may be innovative, utilising knowledge or processes at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine;10.Demonstrate a high level of conceptual understanding that will allow her/ him to critically evaluate research, advanced scholarship and methodologies and argue alternative approaches to the collection, analyses and interpretation of data;11.Independently monitor, critically evaluate and reflect theoretically/ practically on exercise behaviour and sport performance in laboratory and field settings for a variety of populations.
Transferable (key) skills
Masters (taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities, as defined in the modules specified for the programme: - Time Management Skills: Demonstrates autonomy with respect to how to manage their time effectively and flexibly to meet deadlines imposed by themselves and others;- Client Handling Skills: Identifies and manages a wide range of professional relationships across numerous settings;- Team working: can work effectively with a group as leader or member; demonstrates the ability to clarify tasks/ aims and make appropriate use of the capacities of group members while being able to negotiate and handle conflict with confidence;- Problem solving skills: Can deal with complex issues systematically, and demonstrates self-direction and originality/ creativity in tackling/solving problems;- Communication skills: Can engage confidently and competently in academic and professional communication with others using a variety of techniques (e.g. written, oral, digital);- Self-evaluation: Can critically reflect on their own knowledge, understanding and skills in an independent manner and can identify how they can improve/guide the development of these competencies at a higher level. - Can apply and critically evaluate the application of theoretical concepts, practice evaluation and research-based knowledge to sport and exercise medicine settings and / or specialised contexts/populations, demonstrating understanding of the issues governing good practice;- Demonstrates high level technical expertise, working with precision and effectiveness to use a variety of techniques and methods at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine to record, measure, critically evaluate and interpret relevant data;- Can plan, design, execute, and evaluate a sustained piece of original research or review of clinical practice, adapting skills and procedures to understand new and perhaps unexpected research questions;- Develop and implement a variety of critically justified discipline-specific interventions, monitoring and evaluating the effect of these interventions on health, performance and well-being.
Assessment
Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- Evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the sport and exercise medicine;- Demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to the sport and exercise medicine specialist area;- Drawing on a range of perspectives on sport and exercise medicine;- Evaluating and criticising received opinion;- Making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
