MSc Engineering Geology
Year 1
(Award available for year: Master of Science)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme students should have demonstrated how to:1. Apply a broad range of in-depth knowledge to allow professional practice in any aspect of engineering geology.2. Use relevant field and laboratory techniques for the practice of engineering geology.3. Apply advanced knowledge of geological and geomorphological processes along with critical analysis to civil engineering design, even in the absence of complete data sets.4. Use numerate and quantitative skills essential to the professional practice of engineering geology.5. Apply knowledge and skills in soils engineering and rock engineering sufficient to allow professional competence in these areas to the level normally expected for practicing engineering geologists.6. Use modern analytical and numerical approaches to solve geotechnical problems such as soil and rock slope design, and underground space design.7. Work effectively in a team having developed essential teamwork and professional skills to allow successful project completion in a professional engineering framework.8. Manipulate data from borehole sampling and geotechnical testing within industry standard software, to facilitate construction of geological and geotechnical models.9. Communicate the results of their work to both a professional engineering or/ geological audience or to the public at large.Skills Learning OutcomesStudents will have had the opportunity to acquire skills in:1. Project and problem specification and management.2. Independent study and research.3. Critical review of the work of colleagues in a professional environment.4. Methods for independent learning which will allow successful participation in continuing professional development as required for professional accreditation by the relevant body (Geological Society of London, Engineering Council).5. The development of strong teamwork skills within a scientific environment.
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the programme and will include:- Demonstrating the in-depth knowledge of geological principles and techniques relevant to civil engineering.- Demonstrating skills competence in areas that cover the broad range of Engineering Geology as a discipline.
