MSc Medical Imaging

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physical and mathematical aspects of image formation of selected imaging techniques;
2. Identify the anatomical and physiological properties of tissue associated with image formation and contrast for several imaging techniques;
3. Understand the health and safety considerations for selected imaging techniques;
4. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of clinical and other applications of medical imaging, and be able to critically appraise their potential benefits and drawbacks;
5. Demonstrate enhancement of their professional skills in communication, problem-solving, learning effectively and quickly, and effective self-management;
6. Apply common and where relevant specialist IT in literature searching, analysis and display of data;
7. Produce written work, conveying technical information appropriate for the intended academic or professional audience in English
8. Critically evaluate relevant published work, demonstrating an understanding of the underpinning principles of statistics, project design and data analysis;
9. Develop research questions, and undertake research directly or indirectly related to the discipline of Medical Imaging part of which includes the development of a research question/hypothesis, critical review, the choosing and application of an appropriate investigative method, presentation of results and finally a critical discussion of the findings with a conclusion.
10. to demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to the discipline and/or to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of the discipline;
11. to exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
12. to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship;
13. to take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
14. proactively to formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
