Joint European Master on Tribology of Surfaces and Interfaces - TRIBOS
Year 1
(Award available for year: Non Degree)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the year 1 students should have provided evidence of being able:- to demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to tribology and ability to develop theoretical and experimental routes to study and solve tribological problems; - to demonstrate understanding of the tribological contacts and systems, the inter-relation of parameters and ability to determine key effects from nano- to macro-scale- to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of key subjects and techniques applicable to tribology;- to demonstrate understanding of mechanical systems, materials and lubricants production processes, surface and oil analyses- to exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;
Transferable (key) skills
Masters (Taught) students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;- to use contemporary IT techniques for fast and efficient communication and information sharing; - self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;- critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms- ability of involving in multidisciplinary teams in discussing and solving technical problems- awareness of importance of administrative requirements, punctuality, and cooperation - Effective communication and integration ability.
Assessment
Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year 1 and will involve the achievement of the students in:- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry of material failure mechanisms and lubrication systems- use of computation and experimental techniques for solving tribology related problems- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area
