MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine PT(Part-Time) (For students entering from September 2023 onwards)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to: 

1. Demonstrate an in-depth specialist knowledge of the sport and exercise medicine disciplines;

2. Critically appraise the research evidence at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine, which may be interdisciplinary and / or multidisciplinary in nature and communicate the outcome effectively to a range of audiences;

3. Demonstrate an awareness of and ability to manage the implications of ethical dilemmas and work pro-actively with others to formulate solutions whilst strictly adhering to professional codes of conduct in sport and exercise medicine;

4. Demonstrate an in depth, critical understanding of the acute and chronic adaptive responses of the human body to exercise, including rehabilitation, and sport participation, including anatomical and physiological changes, as well as acute and chronic maladaptive responses leading to injury;

5. Independently monitor, critically evaluate and reflect theoretically/ practically on exercise behaviour and sport performance in laboratory and field settings for a variety of populations;

6. Demonstrate critical awareness of contemporary issues and be able to synthesise information in a manner that may be innovative, utilising knowledge or processes at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine;

7. Demonstrate a high level of conceptual understanding in order to critically evaluate research, advanced scholarship and methodologies in sport and exercise medicine and argue alternative approaches to the collection, analyses and interpretation of data;

8. Proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and evaluate these;

9. Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

1. Time Management Skills: Demonstrates autonomy with respect to how to manage their time effectively and flexibly to meet deadlines imposed by themselves and others;

2. Client Handling Skills: Identifies and manages a wide range of professional relationships across numerous settings;

3. Team working: can work effectively with a group as leader or member; demonstrates the ability to clarify tasks/ aims and make appropriate use of the capacities of group members while being able to negotiate and handle conflict with confidence;

4. Problem solving skills: Can deal with complex issues systematically, and demonstrates self-direction and originality/ creativity in tackling/solving problems;

5. Communication skills: Can engage confidently and competently in academic and professional communication with others using a variety of techniques (e.g., written, oral, digital);

6. Self-evaluation: Can critically reflect on their own knowledge, understanding and skills in an independent manner and can identify how they can improve/guide the development of these competencies at a higher level;

7. Can apply and critically evaluate the application of theoretical concepts, practice evaluation and research-based knowledge to sport and exercise medicine settings and / or specialised contexts/populations, demonstrating understanding of the issues governing good practice;

8. Demonstrates high level technical expertise, working with precision and effectiveness to use a variety of techniques and methods at the forefront of sport and exercise medicine to record, measure, critically evaluate and interpret relevant data;

9. Can plan, design, execute, and evaluate a sustained piece of original research or review of clinical practice, adapting skills and procedures to understand new and perhaps unexpected research questions;

10. Develop and implement a variety of critically justified discipline-specific interventions, monitoring and evaluating the effect of these interventions on health, performance and well-being.

Assessment

Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

1. Demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to the sport and exercise medicine specialist area;

2. Drawing on a range of perspectives on sport and exercise medicine;

3. Evaluating and criticising received opinion;

4. Making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.



Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

1. Evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the sport and exercise medicine disciplines;

2. Demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to the sport and exercise medicine specialist area;

3. Drawing on a range of perspectives on the study of sport and exercise medicine;

4. Evaluating and criticising received opinion;

5. Making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
