MSc Transport Planning(Part-time 24month) (For students entering from September 2024 onwards)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

1. - demonstrate an understanding of the main principles, techniques and issues in transport planning;
2. - understand the importance of transport planning in addressing social, economic and environmental issues;
3. - demonstrate the techniques of transport planning in addressing transport problems, taking into account the impacts upon accessibility, economic efficiency, the environment, equity, sustainability, development and the safety of transport systems;
4. - identify and understand the application of the most appropriate instruments of transport planning to specific transport problems and projects;
5. - specialise in selected aspects of the field, gaining deeper knowledge and advanced skills which can be applied in practice;
6. - demonstrate awareness of the advanced skills and their practical application in possible future employment in the transport sector or in further study or research;
7. - demonstrate competence in the identification, collection, management and analysis of a range of data related to transport and its interaction with the environment, society and the economy;
8. - work effectively in interdisciplinary teams on cases and problems relating to transport planning problems;
9. - design and conduct an independent research study on a topic related to transport.

Skills Learning Outcomes
Masters (Taught) students will have had the opportunity to acquire skills in the following categories as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1.Technical skills as described in each of the compulsory and optional modules and relevant to at least the following subject areas: transport policy, transport planning, transport data collection and analysis
2. Work ready skills: Problem-solving and analytical skills, communication, time-management, planning and organisation, technical/it skills, team working/collaboration,
3. Academic skills: reflection, Critical thinking, academic writing, referencing, academic integrity, information searching, time-management.
4.Sustainability skills: systems thinking, critical thinking, effective communication.

Assessment

The learning outcomes for the programme have been designed in conjunction with the learning outcomes of the modules.
Each module comprises a balance of assessment of understanding of core principles, critique of practice and demonstrably applying the core principles to real-world challenges. A range of traditional (Online Time Limited Assessments, essays) and authentic assessments (e.g., reports) are used.
