Pre-sessional Academic English for Postgraduate Studies (two semesters)
Year 1
Learning outcomes
On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the language and skills applicable to academic communication;- demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the issues, cultures and concepts involved in UK academic study as well as those within their own discipline;- exhibit clear competence in the use and understanding of academically acceptable forms of English, both spoken and written in situations relevant to their chosen discipline.
Transferable (key) skills
Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- effective communication in sophisticated English, in a manner appropriate to the University context;- evaluation of personal strengths and weaknesses and those of others;- effective decision making and independent study;- formatting/synthesising a range of ideas and information towards a specified purpose;- a range of techniques for evaluation of information;- development of a proactive and self-reflective role in working and in professional relationships with others;- self-direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing development;- critical engagement in the development of academic norms.
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- demonstrating competencies in the language, skills, knowledge and understanding required of a student who is about to enter taught postgraduate level study;- performing effectively in the academic environment of a University through integrated assessment covering all four skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening) required of a SELT.
