Pre-sessional Academic English for Undergraduate Studies (one semester plus summer)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- use and manipulate written and spoken general and academic language to suit a clear communicative purpose, including having a wide lexical resource, a range of appropriate structures and the ability to use these coherently, accurately and fluently;
- extract the main message of listening texts or lectures without significant loss of detail or subtlety;
- read texts identifying main ideas, specific details, referring words, functions of sentences, and applying strategies for unknown lexis;
- demonstrate appropriate academic style.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- evaluation of sources and selection of information with minimum guidance;
- taking effective notes and integrating sources into their own work;
- use of paraphrasing and referencing skills to avoid plagiarism;
- participating in seminars, discussions and presentations;
- managing their study time mostly effectively;
- identifying personal strengths and weaknesses, and setting independent learning goals;
- using independent learning resources with minimum guidance;
- working with others to realise learning tasks with minimum direction;
- understanding the expectations of study in the UK, including the ability to think critically.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating competencies in the language, skills, knowledge and understanding required of a student who is about to enter undergraduate level study;
- performing effectively in the academic environment of a University through integrated assessments covering all four skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening) required of a SELT.
