BA English and Comparative Literature

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline; e.g. a growing understanding of the recurrence of themes and issues across literatures and across the modules they are studying;
- apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to standard situations outside the context in which they were originally studied; e.g. to be able to bring the theoretical understandings they have developed in the core modules to their studies of a range of literatures in their optional modules;
- appreciate and employ the main methods of enquiry in the subject and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry; e.g. to have become skilled at using theoretical concepts to analyse a range of literary texts;
- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information; e.g. to apply the different theoretical models they have studied to different literary traditions
- adjust to professional and disciplinary boundaries; e.g. to show a developed understanding of the ethical issues involved in reading in translation and in speaking about other cultures;
- effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms; e.g. essays and presentations with a degree of theoretical sophistication and a range of concrete examples.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied; e.g. a developed understanding of the global publishing industry and of the packaging and marketing of books;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility; a developed understanding of the ethical issues involved in interpreting, understanding, and marketing cultures;
- decision making; e.g. an ability to develop a coherent programme of study from the available options.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances; e.g. the ability to apply theoretical understandings to new texts and new literary traditions;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material; e.g. an ability to draw on a wide range of examples;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline; e.g. the ability to write clearly and insightfully with a greater extent of sophistication than level one;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion; e.g. to engage critically with secondary literature.
