Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate an detailed understanding of the structure and dynamics of the internal structure of the earth and the geophysical techniques used to study it;
- test hypotheses by designing and performing comprehensive geophysical surveys, without guidance;
- carry out an independent geophysical research project and produce a piece of written work that has the potential for development for publication;
- describe and comment on aspects of recent research and scholarship and make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- demonstrate a detailed knowledge of a specialist field of geophysics, such as formation and extraction of earth resources, natural hazards etc;
- write computer programs to solve complex numerical and geophysical problems;
- adapt, develop and create new methods of enquiry;
- process and interpret geophysical data taking full account of uncertainties, ambiguities and method limitations.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the ability to communicate knowledge, arguments, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team;
- the skills necessary to undertake employment in industry, professional practice, or a higher level research degree;
- the skills necessary for exercising of initiative and decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability top apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the discipline;
- work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
