BSc Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students will have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate basic skills required for safe working with patients in a clinical environment;
- demonstrate and apply a basic, integrated understanding of applied sciences;
- demonstrate an understanding of health and disease;
- describe the principles of health education and promotion in relation to oral and general health;
- demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis of oral health education;
- demonstrate knowledge of the dental team;
- record and evaluate simple information acquired from a patient, including medical and dental history;
- demonstrate basic life support skills;
- demonstrate experience in providing acceptable dental hygiene treatment for patients under close supervision;
- explain the scientific principles of medical ionizing radiation and statutory regulations;
- search literature on a relevant topic, summarising data and communicating findings by simple and coherent argument;
- apply an understanding of scientific methods in published science relevant to dentistry by evaluating simple data, interpreting and evaluating underlying concepts;
- demonstrate the ability to reflect on their learning experiences and begin to identify their strengths, weaknesses and learning goals;
- demonstrate a responsible approach to time management and an awareness of professional norms and boundaries;
- demonstrate an awareness of the medio-legal, health and safety and ethical issues related to clinical practice.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- communication skills with patients and members of the dental team;
- skills necessary for exercising personal responsibility and professionalism through the Personal and Professional Development module;
- skills in personal organisation and time management;
- literature searching skills on a relevant topic, summarising data and communicating findings by simple and coherent argument.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstration of knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the first year of dental hygiene and dental therapy study;
- submission of work that covers relevant areas;
- demonstration of emerging abilities, skills and competencies through the engagement of simple clinical practice and working arrangements;
- demonstration of an ability to communicate effectively at a basic level.
