Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge of key theories and debates in sociology and their application to contemporary issues in culture and media
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques deployed in the sociology of culture and media
- Display advanced abilities for critical thinking and in-depth analysis of existing scholarship in the sociology of culture and media
- Show a high level understanding of epistemological debates, research design principles and investigative techniques relevant to the study of contemporary aspects of culture and media
- Develop, implement and execute research ideas and plans to evaluate critically current debates in the field; to design, implement and evaluate innovative research project reflexively, taking account of ethical considerations.
- Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- Be able to conduct a piece of individual research using appropriate conceptual frameworks and methods on a topic related to Society, Media and Culture.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- To display the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- To demonstrate self–directed learning and effective decision–making across a range of different research areas in the sociology of culture and media.
- To demonstrate independent learning skills self–management, as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a group.
- To display advanced communication skills, both written and oral, and presentation skills to communicate to a variety of audiences and through different media.
- To demonstrate analytical skills, critical thinking, flexibility and adaptability.
- To evaluate individual progress in relation to identified learning outcomes and to manage own learning through objective setting and monitoring progress by critical reflection and responding to feedback.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- Evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- Demonstrating and communicating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- Drawing on a range of perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches across an area of study;
- Evaluating and criticising scholarship and opinion;
- Making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
