MSc (Eng) Transport Infrastructure: Design and Construction (Part-time)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able:
• [O1] - To demonstrate in-depth specialist knowledge and a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of the design, construction, and operation of land transport infrastructure engineering. This includes:
[O1.1] - Construction technology: equipment, operational organisation, construction methods,
and prefabrication.
[O1.2] - Interactions between construction and design, and their impact on the project progress
costs, management, duration) and the resulting built infrastructure (performance,
durability, resilience).
[O1.3] - Latest developments in structural health monitoring applied to the monitoring,
maintenance and repair of land transport infrastructure.
[O1.4] - Methods and numerical techniques of structural modelling and analysis.
[O1.5] - Bridge engineering: structural types, construction sequences, modelling, design, services.
[O1.6] - Roads, highway engineering and underground construction.
[O1.7] – The role of the professional engineer in society, including health, safety, environment,
sustainability, ethical issues and risk assessment.
[O1.8] – The framework of relevant requirements governing engineering activities, including
personnel, health, safety, and awareness of risk issues.
• [O2] - To exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities, namely:
[O2.1] - Identifying the limits of own knowledge and skills, and strive to extend own capabilities.
[O2.2] - Creativity and innovation in approaching complex problems.
[O2.3] - Conducting appropriate research, identifying sources of information and critically
assessing their relevance.
[O2.4] - Learning from feedback to improve and build best practice.
[O2.5] - Presenting and discussing complex information in a succint but precise manner.
• [O3] - To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research and advanced scholarship within the areas of civil and structural engineering and, in particular, in relation to the design, construction, and maintenance of land transport infrastructure;
• [O4] - To take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
• [O5] - To proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
• [O6] - To critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the areas of civil and structural engineering and, in particular, in relation to the design, construction, and maintenance of land transport infrastructure.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (taught), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

• The skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
• Evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
• Self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
• Independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
• Critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.
• The skills necessary to work as an individual or as a member of a team.
• Methods of project/problem specification and management, including: methods for independent study and research, and review of the work of colleagues in a professional environment.
• Methods of independent learning which will allow successful participation in continuing professional development as required for professional accreditation.
• Development of strong teamwork skills within a scientific environment.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
• Evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
• Demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to the complex specialist areas of design, construction, and maintenance of land transport infrastructure;
• Drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
• Evaluating and criticising received opinion;
• Making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
