Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Design)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Design) programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of Design as an academic discipline;

2. demonstrate, via cross-disciplinary study, appropriate language skills, academic skills, and knowledge associated with the subjects required to progress to their intended undergraduate degree programmes offered by the University of Leeds School of Design;

3. apply language skills, academic skills and knowledge to understand and critically analyse important concepts, issues, principles, and techniques in Design and, more broadly, the arts, humanities, and cultures;

4. demonstrate knowledge and application of communication skills, team-working, and problem-solving approaches used in Design and, more broadly, the arts, humanities, and cultures;

5. demonstrate knowledge and application of traditional and digital tools and processes used to communicate creative concepts and outcomes;

6. develop a reflective practice.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Design) programme:

1. analytical skills, including design, critical, and creative thinking from theoretical and practice-based perspectives, analysing contemporary issues and case studies, and creative problem solving in their discipline;

2. communication skills, including verbal and written fluency in constructing a logical and coherent argument and participating in group discussions;

3. research skills, including using bibliographies and databases and exploring cross-disciplinary and subject-specific research;

4. team working, including sharing ideas and work in group tutorials and working on group assessments;

5. design practical skills from practical/studio sessions and the ability to use audio and/or visual aids;

6. academic study skills, including reading and note-taking skills, academic writing skills for reports, exams and assignments, oral presentation skills, seminar discussion skills, listening and note-taking skills, library and web research skills, independent language learning skills, and IT skills.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Design) programme and will include:

1. demonstrating a critical understanding of contemporary issues in design, as well as the importance of team working and sharing ideas;

2. combining students’ collective skills and applying the practical skills acquired through the workshop sessions;

3. reflecting on the weekly lectures and seminars and students starting to situate themselves as creative practitioners;

4. building on and consolidating the general design knowledge and practice gained in semester 1 and further challenging the student to apply this knowledge in the context of their distinct specialism;

5. demonstrating application of the macro and micro skills taught on the academic study skills module and being able to draw on several relevant skills simultaneously;

6. reflecting on learning in a way that supports the development of language skills;

7. finding, summarising, and discussing relevant readings;

8. developing research skills, verbal fluency, communication in different contexts, and the ability to use audio and or visual aids;

9. opportunities to put content and skills learning into practice and/or new subject matter.
