Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

independently identify, evaluate and analyse complex problems in the literature in order to develop and sustain an argument

understand and critically engage with the writings of major scholars across theology and religious studies and beyond

apply knowledge of theories and arguments in theology and religious studies to selected topics in their chosen area

build on their understandings of methodologies used in theology and religious studies

demonstrate a coherent and detailed subject knowledge concerning theology and religious studies, informed by evaluation, analysis and critical scrutiny of recent research/scholarship in the discipline

comprehend the multidisciplinary nature of work on religion across the approaches of theology, religious studies, sociology, anthropology, geography, politics and cultural studies.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

Qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment (Communication both written and verbal, Problem solving, Decision making, Ability to assess arguments, Ability to evaluate competing interpretations, Ability to construct and defend their own view, Ability to work with others, and Use of IT);

Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility (Learning to Learn, Ability to organise time and submit work to deadlines, Awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses).

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;

work that draws on a wide variety of material;

the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;

evidence of an ability to conduct independent enquiry within the discipline.
