Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the discipline, encompassing and integrating the technological, people, operational, regulatory and process aspects of the aviation industry;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the aviation discipline and demonstrate the ability to integrate multiple techniques;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument, where appropriate drawing on and integrating aviation's multiple constituent disciplines;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship in aviation, or applicable to this industry;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the aviation discipline;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources, distinguishing between the academic value of each source;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended aviation project;
- conform to the professional boundaries, norms and expectations of aviation as a safety critical industry and distinguish which specific behaviours are appropriate to the situation at hand.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related a wide range of aviation careers, both technical and non-technical;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility at the high level expected by regulation and the aviation industry;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations and recognition of the role that probability plays in aviation outcomes;
- the communication of technical and non-technical information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of an academic, professional or equivalent nature in aviation or allied fields.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the aviation discipline to unfamiliar and emerging challenges;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material from academic, aviation industry and governmental sources;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion and to distinguish objective evidence from opinion, speculation or anecdote;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the aviation discipline;
- work that is typically both evaluative and creative and which integrates a range of aviation knowledge and techniques, drawn from aviation’s multiple constituent disciplines.
