Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Engineering) you should have provided evidence of being able to:

1. - demonstrate a thorough understanding of the mathematical and scientific concepts, principles and techniques required to gain entry to the undergraduate degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering;
2. - evaluate and analyse mathematical and scientific data;
3. - solve mathematical and/or scientific problems at an appropriate level for University entry;
4. - undertake laboratory experiments and interpret and communicate results from these both verbally and in written form;
5. - make a formal presentation;
6. - present a structured and coherent simple argument;
7. - appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
8. - engage with the Faculty of Engineering undergraduate degree programmes.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Engineering) programme:

- Qualities and transferable skills necessary for further study on Engineering undergraduate programmes to which they are intending to progress, including knowing how to:
> model and solve basic mathematical and scientific problems;
> prepare laboratory reports;
> give presentations;
> access the University library and computing facilities;
> work co-operatively as part of a team.
- Skills necessary for the collection and communication of relevant mathematical and scientific information.
- Skills necessary for time management, collecting and evaluating information, effective reading, note taking, essay writing and preparing for examinations.
- Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and the management of own learning.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Engineering) and will include:

examining the students’ knowledge and ability to apply the standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the Faculty of Engineering undergraduate degree programmes by methods such as:
• assessments of presentations;
• evaluation of written laboratory reports and examples sheets;
• in-class tests and quizzes;
• formal written examinations.
