BEng Materials Science and Engineering

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of:
1. familiarity with the basic concepts and terminology associated with engineering materials, including the relationship between processing of materials, microstructure and subsequent properties together with the nature of the microstructural changes a material may experience in service;
2. an understanding of basic engineering principles and of the fundamental scientific concepts underpinning those concepts including thermodynamics, electronic structure and bonding, heat transfer and the interactions of waves with matter, including X-ray diffraction;
3. being capable of using mathematical techniques to solve simple scientific and engineering problems;
4. being able to analyse and evaluate scientific data and communicate their findings in written and verbal form;
5. being capable of undertaking a simple group project involving a basic materials processing operation;
6. being able to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
7. being aware of professional and materials engineering-specific boundaries.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
2. skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
1. demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
2. work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
3. demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
