Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- show strong progress in developing their instrumental or vocal technique and performance skills;
- demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and theoretical paradigms of music analysis, theory and history;
- display an ability to apply these concepts and paradigms in a range of different musicological perspectives;
- develop an understanding of musical processes;;
- acquire skills in academic research and writing, engaging with specific set texts and showing an ability to find and research relevant texts independently;
- demonstrate an ability to reflect critically on their own progress and achievement;
- demonstrate personal organisation, reliability and self-discipline.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.


Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
