BSc Environmental Science

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year / programme students should be able to:

- display knowledge of a broad range of scientific approaches and perspectives on environmental issues from introductory modules in each of the natural sciences;
- explore substantive aspects of human-environmental relations in the context of key environmental problems and debates;
- demonstrate practical competencies in environmental analysis techniques, including field and laboratory work;
- apply basic core training in aspects of data collection, handling and analysis in relation to environmental issues.

Through choice from a wide range of optional modules, students will have the opportunity either to focus on particular aspects of environmental science or to retain a broad inter-disciplinary base. Through the choice of electives students are able to either extend their range of environmental science expertise or to explore a discipline outside Environmental Science in order to gain skills to complement their environmental expertise.

Transferable (key) skills

On completion of the year / programme, students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme, a basic proficiency in the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in environmental and other careers, including:

- intellectual skills (for example, interpreting and evaluating environmental scientific theories and principles, and presenting a structured and coherent simple argument);
- practical skills (including basic competencies in field and laboratory work);
- communication skills (in both written, graphic and oral forms);
- numerical and C&IT skills (data collection, handling and analysis);
- interpersonal and teamwork skills (recognising and respecting the views of other group members in field, laboratory and discussions settings);
- self-management and professional development skills (through use of the reflective portfolio and assessment feedback, and time management skills to meet deadlines).

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of each module:

- demonstrating sound knowledge and application of substantive learning outcomes;
- demonstrating emerging abilities and competencies in transferable (key) skills.
