MA Arabic/English Translation(Part-Time)

Learning outcomes

In addition to the learning outcomes evidenced by the end of Year 1, by the end of Year 2 of the programme, students should be able:
- to demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of Arabic translation techniques and the application of theoretical concepts in Translation Studies in order to rate and improve their own translation performance (where appropriate as a follow-on from Year 1 module selection)
- to demonstrate enhanced specialist knowledge and understanding of issues and/or mastery of skills related to the fields of Arabic translation and translation studies broadly conceived (via optional modules)
- to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to research in Arabic translation and translation studies;
- to take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and developing professional relationships with others;
- to proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these.

Transferable (key) skills

By the end of Year 2, Masters students will have had the opportunity to fully acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree in the field or for employment in a higher capacity in Arabic language and Arabic translation-oriented industry;
- the ability to evaluate their own achievement and those of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- critical engagement in the development of professional norms.


Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the programme and, during Year 2 of the programme, will involve the achievement of the students in:
- evidencing the ability to conduct independent enquiry within the disciplines studied;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth of knowledge to translation and Arabic language-related issues;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
