Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should:
- be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a range of advanced topics in chemical engineering, including advanced reaction engineering, multi-scale modelling and advanced mathematical techniques;
- be able to appreciate and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of new developments and advances in the field of chemical engineering;
- be able to demonstrate a detailed appreciation of published research and other information relevant to chemical engineering;
- be capable of taking a proactive and self-reflective role in their working and be able to develop professional relationships with others;
- be capable of undertaking an individual research project on a chemical engineering topic and be able to plan, research, execute, evaluate and report the results of an appropriate programme of work in a variety of forms, including written, verbal and poster presentations;
- be capable of critically and creatively evaluating current issues, research and scholarship in various aspects of chemical engineering.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- an evaluation of their own achievement or that of others;
- self-direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensure continuing professional development;
- a critical engagement in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.


Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
