Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to show:
- An understanding of key characteristics of the consultancy industry and the key issues which are confronting it
- An understanding of the different roles performed by management consultants for their clients and the skills associated with these
- Knowledge of the core concepts, methods and frameworks in management consultancy, strategic and change management and of their application to a range of contemporary issues and situations
- Knowledge of the research, debates and controversies surrounding management consultancy
- Knowledge of the research designs and research methods commonly employed within the discipline and their attendant difficulties
- Knowledge of ethical conduct, professional issues and practical constraints in management consultancy projects
- An ability to understand and critically evaluate management and consultancy research
- Competence in field research and advanced data analysis (quantitative and qualitative) gained through completion of a formal teaching programme in research methods and data analysis
- Competence in all aspects of the consultancy life-cycle including scoping, diagnosis, problem solution and their associated documentation
- Completion of a data-driven consultancy project, which should normally entail field work of an applied kind that provides an opportunity for learning about the practicalities of consultancy work including any ethical and professional issues
- The development of a range of technical, analytical, interpersonal and/or consultancy skills

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Competence in field research and advanced data analysis (quantitative and qualitative) gained through completion of a formal teaching programme in research methods and data analysis
- Competence in all aspects of the consultancy life-cycle including scoping, diagnosis, problem solution and their associated documentation
- Completion of a data-driven consultancy project, which should normally entail field work of an applied kind that provides an opportunity for learning about the practicalities of consultancy work including any ethical and professional issues
- The development of a range of technical, analytical, interpersonal and/or consultancy skills

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of MSc in Management Consulting will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- Discussing and analysing the history of the consulting industry, the key characteristics of the consultancy industry and its market
- Evaluating the purpose, nature and effectiveness of different consulting interventions through an analysis of the consultancy life cycle
- Evaluating and criticising received opinion through critical thinking in evidence based consultancy and research methods contexts
- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline through a project/dissertation in Consulting
